Lompoc Health welcomes family medicine physician Dr. Minh Quan Nguyen, whose interest in getting to know patients and their families helped guide his choice of specialty and brought him to a community where he and his family can put down roots.
For Dr. Nguyen, family medicine offers him an opportunity to build lasting relationships with patients, understand their histories and learn about the experiences that shape their lives.
“That feeling of knowing them and they know me,” he said of what he values about the specialty.
Dr. Nguyen is now seeing patients at Lompoc Health – North H Center.
During his clinical rotations, Dr. Nguyen found himself drawn to the continuity of family medicine. He enjoyed the opportunity to develop a deeper understanding of each patient and their family circumstances.
Growing up, Dr. Nguyen listened to the stories of father, who served in the military during wartime. That upbringing helped him develop a curiosity about other people – something that he uses in his approach to healthcare.
“Turns out I love listening to stories about other people,” said Dr. Nguyen, a member of the American Board of Family Medicine and the American Academy of Family Physicians.
Dr. Nguyen is the first in his family to study medicine, after a short volunteer experience at a free clinic as a teenager left a lasting impression on him. While volunteering, a young physician took time to teach him how to measure blood pressure. The physician’s knowledge, kindness and willingness to teach inspired Dr. Nguyen to pursue a medical career.
“It just stands out for some reason,” recalled Dr. Nguyen, who speaks English and Vietnamese.
Dr. Nguyen earned his medical degree from the Medical University of Lublin in Poland in 2015. His family medicine residency training included Jackson Hospital and Clinic in Alabama, and Memorial Health Gulfport in Mississippi.
In addition to ongoing primary care, his clinical interests include office procedures such as joint injections, skin biopsies and treatment of abscesses.
His community service has included volunteering with Community Action Partnership of Orange County, PIH Health Hospital in Downey, a COVID-19 booster clinic and youth sports physical examinations in Alabama.
The decision to come to Lompoc was both professional and personal. With a young daughter and parents living in Orange County, Dr. Nguyen wanted to return to California and bring his family closer together. Lompoc was the only community where he interviewed.
A welcoming introduction to the staff and a tour of the area helped him envision a future in the community, he noted. He was drawn to the surroundings, opportunities to explore and the prospect of a good place for his toddler daughter to grow up. The move also puts grandparents within driving distance, making family visits easier.
“Everyone here is super nice and helpful,” he said. “It’s great.”
