FAQs About Sleep Studies

What to Expect: Sleep Study FAQs

If you’re considering or have been referred for a sleep study, you likely have questions — and we’re here to provide answers. Our goal at the LVMC Sleep Disorder Center is to make the process as clear and comfortable as possible.

What does a sleep study monitor?

A sleep study, whether done at home or in our lab, tracks how your body functions while you sleep.
We monitor:

  • Brain activity (to determine your sleep stages)
  • Heart rate and rhythm
  • Breathing patterns and pauses
  • Oxygen levels in your blood
  • Eye movement and muscle activity
  • Snoring and airflow
  • This information helps our board-certified sleep specialists diagnose conditions like obstructive sleep apnea, insomnia, and more.

Will I actually be able to sleep in the lab?

Yes — most people sleep better than they expect. Our lab is designed to feel more like a private hotel room than a hospital.
You’ll find:

  • A queen-size bed with a comfortable mattress and soft bedding
  • A quiet, private space with a television
  • A trained technician monitoring your study from a nearby room
You’ll be able to follow your usual evening routine and bring items that help you feel at home (like pajamas, a book, or a favorite pillow).

How do I prepare for my sleep study?

Preparation is easy!
Here’s what to do:

  • Avoid caffeine and alcohol the afternoon and evening before your study
  • Shower and avoid using lotions, oils, or hair products (they can interfere with sensors)
  • Bring comfortable sleepwear, any medications you usually take at night and toiletries
  • Arrive on time and plan for a full night’s rest — we’ll typically wake you around 5–6 a.m. the next morning
  • You’ll receive a detailed instruction sheet prior to your appointment.

What if I’ve already done a home sleep test (HST)?

If you’ve recently completed a home sleep test, great! That’s often the first step in diagnosing sleep apnea.
Depending on your results, your sleep specialist may:

  • Use the data to create a treatment plan
  • Recommend an in-lab study for a more detailed look
  • Evaluate whether advanced therapies like CPAP or Inspire are appropriate
  • Even if you've done a home test, the next steps can vary — and we’ll walk you through them.
