During a free presentation on May 20, 2026, Lompoc Health’s newest pediatrician will discuss how shame-based counseling negatively impacts pediatric health behaviors -- an especially timely topic as childhood obesity rates remain a significant public health concern nationwide.
Dr. Ayda Alavi, who has been with Lompoc Health – North Third Center for almost one year, will present her “Beyond BMI: Counseling Kids and Families on Nutrition and Fitness” lecture at 6 p.m. May 20 at the Dick DeWees Community and Senior Center. The center is located at 1120 W. Ocean Ave. Reservations are not required.
The presentation is part of the Lompoc Hospital District Foundation’s Community Education Lecture Series.
Dr. Alavi will distinguish between weight-focused and health-focused counseling approaches and explain why traditional, shame-based messaging about weight can be harmful. Research shows that children who experience weight stigma are more likely to develop unhealthy eating behaviors, avoid physical activity and experience anxiety, depression, and low self-esteem. Rather than improving health outcomes, stigma can create barriers to care and discourage positive lifestyle changes.
Dr. Alavi, who earned her medical degree from the Michigan State University College of Human Medicine, will highlight how shifting the focus from weight to overall well-being -- including balanced nutrition, physical activity, sleep, and emotional health -- can lead to more sustainable, positive outcomes. She will also discuss how parents, caregivers, educators, and healthcare providers can navigate sensitive conversations in ways that build trust and motivation.
